Copper Corner - First turns will wait, but there’s a weekend at Copper

Your Week in review & Week ahead!

If you left your skis by the door for opening day, you can give them a little more time there. Copper has delayed the start of skiing and riding. Elsewhere this week, Summit voters weighed in on how to fund local schools, and Copper’s December halfpipe competition took another step toward welcoming the World Cup. Here’s what each means for the people who call Copper home.

Opening day moves off the calendar

Copper’s November 5 update supersedes the November 6 date many families had marked for first turns. The resort says fall brought more rain than snow, and temperatures haven’t stayed cold enough for consistent snowmaking. Crews need more time to prepare the surface. As of Friday morning, Copper says it will open as soon as it can and has given no replacement date just yet.

If family or friends are driving up, send them the resort’s announcement before they leave. Look for the opening-delay message on the coppercolorado.com homepage. There’s still something on the calendar for today. Woodward Copper lists its indoor Barn Bash from 4 to 6 p.m., with an introductory skate clinic in the second hour. A Barn Drop-In or Barn Season Pass is required. The organizer says guests can come without an RSVP.

What the school vote means for a Summit household

Following Tuesday’s election, Krystal 93 reported that Summit School District’s Issue 4A had enough support to pass. The district’s ballot language calls for approximately $5.9 million in additional annual operating revenue from property taxes beginning with the 2027 collection year. For a homeowner wondering where the money would go, the largest proposed share, $4.5 million, is for staff compensation. The plan also supports reading, math and career preparation.

Families made different judgments about that tradeoff. Supporters saw a way to keep teachers in a high-cost mountain community. Residents concerned about affordability questioned how much more local property owners should carry. For the ballot wording, spending categories and assumptions behind the estimate, the district has collected them in one place.

A December date for halfpipe fans

On November 4, U.S. Ski & Snowboard opened media accreditation for the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix at Copper. If your household has a favorite discipline, the schedule makes it easier to pick a day. Snowboard qualifying is planned for Thursday, December 17, followed by freeski qualifying on Friday. The snowboard final is scheduled for Saturday, December 19, and the freeski final for Sunday, December 20.

For neighbors expecting holiday guests, those are four dates to pencil in now. The announcement concerns press access. Check the organizer’s spectator information closer to competition before promising anyone a viewing spot or making plans around a particular start time.

Around the community, November 7–13

Saturday offers a reason to spend a couple of hours on Frisco’s Main Street. Local performer Leon Joseph Littlebird will share Native American stories and music at the Historic Park Log Chapel, 120 East Main Street, from noon to 2 p.m. The museum welcomes all ages, admission is free, and you can come without registering. It’s an easy invitation to extend to a neighbor or a family visiting for the weekend.

On Tuesday, November 10, the Copper community associations list their CMRA/VAC/POLA board meeting for 2 p.m. Homeowners can join by Zoom through the community calendar, which is also the place to check for a change before signing on.
