water, winter AND WHAT’S AHEAD: OCT. 23, 2026

For Copper homeowners and businesses, this week's most useful developments connect the place we enjoy with the practical work of caring for it. A new statewide climate summary puts water concerns in perspective; Copper has described its approach to snowmaking; and a chance to cheer for our favorite hometown resort. Alongside those developments, the coming week offers opportunities to prepare equipment, spend time with neighbors and make thoughtful travel plans.

A new state water-year assessment

The Colorado Climate Center's October 22 summary identifies 2026 as Colorado's warmest water year in records beginning in 1895. It reports statewide temperatures 4.5°F above the 1991–2020 average and mountain snowpack peaking at roughly 51% of average.

Those are statewide findings, not measurements for an individual Copper property or a forecast for the coming ski season. For homeowners, they offer useful context for conversations about water use and mountain conditions. A practical household step is to review any property-manager notices and address known leaks, while checking the responsible provider for current local instructions.

Copper explains its snowmaking approach

Reporting published October 20 by KUNC, from Summit Daily journalist Jessica Sachs, includes a statement from Copper describing how it prioritizes essential terrain, adjusts operations to natural snowfall and seeks efficient use of water and energy. That distinction matters when making plans with family or guests. Snowmaking activity alone does not tell us which terrain will be available or guarantee a particular opening experience. The article also includes resort estimates about water returning to the watershed. Residents can welcome winter preparations while keeping questions about water stewardship grounded.

A chance to cheer for Copper

For a nearby outdoor outing, Frisco's Girls on the Run 5K is scheduled Saturday, October 24, at 11 a.m. at Summit Middle School, 158 School Road. The town lists $45 race-day registration. The earlier discounted registration window has passed. This is an untimed community run; pets should stay home, and strollers start at the back of the last wave.

Before the drive

CDOT's earlier Floyd Hill notice included conditional fallback work on October 25–27. Those dates should not be treated as confirmed additional closures. Likewise, the scheduled October 23 end of the Hidden Valley ramp closure is not proof of reopening. Check COtrip before setting out, especially when coordinating guest arrivals or an evening return home.
